What Is Going On
An opener that loses power mid-cycle almost always leaves the door part-open or fully closed with the trolley disengaged from the carriage. That's the opener protecting itself, not failing. The manual release cord - the one with the red handle - drops the door out of gear so you can lift it by hand until power's back.
With a median build year of 1964 across this area, a good share of these openers are second or third replacements on the same header bracket, wired into a run that was never meant for more than a chain-drive motor and a light bulb. When the power comes back after a cut, some of these openers need the wall button held for a few seconds to re-sync, and some older chain-drive units with no battery backup just sit dark until you flip the light switch on the unit itself.
The other pattern we see: a power cut hits while the door is mid-travel, and the safety sensors lose their alignment when the unit resets. The door then refuses to close on remote, blinking a light instead. That's not a motor problem - it's usually a sensor bump, and it's a five-minute fix once someone's looking at it directly.
What the Weather Here Does to It
This area sits in a cold-severe climate band, and outages here tend to cluster around ice and heavy wet snow loads on the lines, not summer storms. That timing matters for openers: a power cut in January means the garage is also cold enough that the door's weight has shifted slightly on frozen tracks, and the manual release you're relying on to get the car out has to fight both the cold grease and the extra effort of hand-lifting a door built for spring assist.
Older torsion springs, especially the kind installed on houses from the 1960s and 70s stock common here, lose a little tension in hard cold. That's not dangerous on its own, but it means the same door that lifts easy by hand in July can feel twenty pounds heavier in a February outage, right when you need it to move.
If your opener has no battery backup - and a lot of the original installs in this area don't - a cold-weather outage is the one time a year you actually need the manual release to work smoothly. Worth checking that cord and handle now, not during the outage.
